Ocean’s Eleven Meets High Fantasy?
This summer, I released Trace, my Force of Magic Novella. Overall, I was satisfied with the title, which is a simple introduction to this magical world. That is until I read my friend, T.J. McKay’s own Skyfold. McKay raises the bar on what can be done with a Novella.
In Skyfold, we’re thrown immediately into the action with a ragtag duo who soon becomes a trio of adventurers who are breaking into an impregnable fortress. In this fantasy adventure heist, we don’t get to see the planning, but learn about the challenges they have to overcome on the fly. Even at 96 pages, there are lots of important details and world-building. This is a fun fantasy read that stands on it’s own. Bravo! Mr. McKay, five well earned stars.

Book Rankings
Indie Authors have issues. We have to do so many of the jobs ourselves. Marketing, editing, proofreading, and often being our own worst critic. Writing might be the most important part of the process, but we often spend far too much time on everything else. One temptation is to check the dashboards. We look at things like sales, page reads and nothing hits us more than a new review. I’ve learned to not let each review hit me quite so hard now that there are more than a few, but I still don’t have enough to ignore them completely. I recently noticed that several of my books have about the same number of reviews. I expect The Agency and Across the Shining Sea to surpass the previous books soon, but for the time being they are all quite close. I was also pleased to see that the books are trending up in the ratings as well. I made this fun chart to compare them.
Here’s a recent review that caught my eye. :)
Charlie Kirk
This week saw yet another tragedy in a time that seems to be filled with them. I never met Charlie Kirk, and didn’t follow his career closely, but like many of you, I saw his videos online. The thing that struck me about him was how he seemed to be kind and respectful to everyone he interacted with, regardless of their behavior. He entered into the public arena with compassion, boldly proclaiming his views, disagreeing politely and never attacking people personally.
I grieve over the loss of that voice in a world filled with vitriol and much more bombastic rhetoric. I also grieve over the loss of a husband and a father of two small children. In my experience, Charlie did his best to promote the kind of free speech we should all be in favor of, honest and respectful, with no interest in silencing the other side.
In this modern world, we’re constantly aware of things which we are personally disconnected from. This is dangerous and not a path for mental health or positive change. Two points related to this. One, we should be more vested in our own communities and those who surround us, looking to improve those in tangible ways, rather than worrying so much about that which we can’t change and control because we aren’t directly involved in them. Secondly, we should look at ourselves and evaluate our own motivations and brokenness before we begin to engage with the problems of others.
Take some time today for introspection and then spend more time with those you love, living your life in such a way that benefits those closest to you. That’s where real life is found, not on the internet or on social media.
