Karven
The Overlord moved into the tent. Karven followed him, ducking his head as he entered. The ceiling was tall to accommodate the giant of a man. Rarely had Karven felt so insignificant in the presence of another. Karven watched as he pulled on furs to cover his muscular frame. More furs covered some of the floor of the tent, but there was no place to sit, except perhaps a few trunks scattered about.
"You came quickly. I thought it might be longer, if you appeared at all."
"The Guild may not recognize your importance, but I've watched your progress with great interest. In our history, no one has been so successful at bringing the forces of men together. I believe we're entering a new age."
The Overlord opened a trunk and pulled out a wine cask and two wooden cups. "Will you join me in a drink?"
Karven looked around as if to suddenly find a table that was previously hidden, but the behemoth only gestured to a spot on the ground, covered with furs.
"In the field we only carry that which is essential for sustenance and war. The time for comfort will come after the battles are won."
Karven took a spot on the ground and the Overlord joined him. Even sitting down he still towered over Karven.
"And what is your goal? When will the battles finally be won?"
He poured the wine and handed Karven the cup. It was surprisingly good and he was glad to have it after his long journey.
"I know some of the history of this land. It has known division and conflict for as long as memory. I lost my family as a child when one such clash spilled over into our village. Those who are weak have forever suffered at the hands of the strong. Some, like your Guild, might have acted to prevent such things. For some reason, they never did."
"The Guild has a stance about interfering in the conflicts of kingdoms. They never act for one side or the other," Karven said before taking a sip of his wine.
"I've heard of this, but I also know that it isn't always true. Sometimes, members of the Guild have meddled in ways that have changed the flow of time. Though they would do it in a way that would not appear so. Do you know this?"
"I've heard…rumors. Some say the members of the Council act as you've said. I've only recently joined the High Council, so I'm not privy to all their doings."
The Overlord stared at Karven, watching his face as if to detect any deceit. He remained silent as he took another drink of his wine and then filled his cup again.
"I understand soldiers. I know war. I've been granted the will and the strength to prevail in any combat. I have no fear of any weapon that may come my way." He paused as he continued to examine Karven before finally gesturing at him with his cup. "Magic. That is something I don't understand. I've seen it melt the strongest steel and break the thickest wall. I will prevail in uniting the lands under my rule, but the only thing that can interfere is your Guild."
"That they might. What would you have me do?"
